Phyllis Wade ranks among the very elite levels of volunteerism, especially for golf.
Phyllis began her golf volunteering at the 1948 Los Angeles Open and through 2011 hasn't missed a year in 63 events. Along the way Phyllis became good friends with many of the players including Ben Hogan and his wife Valerie.
But Phyllis didn't stop there. When Dinah Shore created the Palm Springs LPGA event in 1972, Phyllis was quick to volunteer and no surprise, hasn't missed a year in 40 events. When San Diego initiated the San Diego Open in 1952, yes, you guessed it, there was Phyllis offering to help in any way for over 50 years. Phyllis says "I missed a couple but I can't remember for sure which years."
Phyllis's love for golf also took her to the amateur ranks. When the San Diego Junior Golf Association formed the Junior World in 1968, Phyllis was there to volunteer and to cheer for all the young players and has kept doing so for nearly 40 years. The Special Olympics counted on Phyllis for nearly 30 years and countless charity tournaments such as the Vince Ferragamo Foundation tournament have depended on Phyllis to help out.
In 2008, at a gathering in New Orleans, Phyllis was recognized by PGA Commissioner Tim Finchim as the '2007 Volunteer of the Year'. The totality of all Phyllis has contributed is too vast to list here but few if any can surpass her commitment and longevity to volunteerism.
And now Phyllis is looking forward to volunteering at another inaugural tournament next year, the Veritas World Junior, and the start of another amazing streak.
Thanks Phyllis!

After each year of Veritas, one volunteer from each of the 26 divisions will be chosen to be honored with the Phyllis Wade Award of Distinction.
In this way, Phyllis can literally now continue to volunteer forever and inspire all of us by what she has contributed to our community and the game of golf.
